PU Paint Finish for Hotel Furniture: 5 Critical Coating Control Points with Taiho PU System

In hotel furniture manufacturing, PU paint (polyurethane coating) has maintained approximately 60% market share in the furniture finishing industry. Its combination of excellent film fullness, hardness, and adhesion makes it the preferred choice for hospitality-grade custom furniture. Our factory uses the Taiho PU paint system — one of China's leading furniture coating brands — valued for its consistent performance in hardness, fullness, and low-odor formulation.

However, quality paint is only half the equation. The coating application process is equally critical. Here are the 5 key control points we follow in our PU coating workflow for hotel furniture projects.

Control Point 1: Substrate Moisture Content and Surface Preparation

The first step in PU coating has nothing to do with paint — it's about the board condition. Whether using plywood, MDF, or particleboard, substrate moisture content must be maintained between 8%-12%.

Excess moisture causes blushing and blistering in the finished film. Too-dry boards absorb paint too quickly, resulting in rough, uneven coverage. Before entering the spray booth, all surfaces require sanding with 240#-320# grit paper to remove contamination and loose fibers.

Key note: MDF surfaces must be sealed with filler or sealer primer before PU application. Direct spraying on untreated MDF leads to swelling and poor adhesion.

Control Point 2: Mixing Accuracy and Pot Life Management

PU paint is a two-component system requiring precise mixing of main agent (Component A) and hardener (Component B) by weight. The Taiho PU system typically specifies a 4:1 to 5:1 ratio.

Incorrect ratios produce serious defects: excess hardener creates brittle, crack-prone films; insufficient hardener results in soft, poorly cured coatings that never reach rated hardness. After mixing, the pot life is typically 1 hour — mixed paint used beyond this window should be discarded regardless of diluent additions.

Control Point 3: Primer Application and Sanding Sequence

The standard PU coating process for hotel furniture follows a "PU primer + PU topcoat" sequence, with 2-3 primer coats applied and sanded between each pass.

The first primer coat (sealer) should be applied slightly thin to penetrate wood pores and establish bonding. Subsequent coats build film thickness, with each coat fully dried before sanding with 400# grit. Care must be taken not to sand through the primer — especially on edges and profiles where film tends to be thinner.

Control Point 4: Topcoat Spraying and Environmental Control

Topcoat application directly determines visual quality. Before spraying, the mixed topcoat must be filtered through a 150-mesh screen and allowed to rest for 10-15 minutes to release entrapped air.

Spray booth conditions require careful monitoring:

  • Temperature: Maintain 15-30°C for proper flow and drying balance
  • Humidity: Keep below 85% RH to prevent film blushing
  • Ventilation: Adequate airflow with filtration prevents dust contamination in wet film

Total film thickness should remain under 150μm. Applying excessive thickness in a single pass leads to runs, sagging, and incomplete curing beneath the surface.

Control Point 5: Curing Schedule and Quality Inspection

PU coatings develop in two stages: surface dry (2-4 hours) and full cure (24-72 hours depending on temperature and film build). Furniture must not be stacked, wrapped, or shipped before full cure.

Quality inspection covers four dimensions:

  • Appearance: Smooth, uniform surface free of runs, craters, dust inclusions, or blushing
  • Gloss consistency: Uniform across all surfaces per specified sheen level
  • Adhesion: Cross-hatch test per ISO 2409, no film removal
  • Hardness: Pencil hardness rating, typically HB-H for hospitality furniture

5-Step Application Guide

  1. Substrate prep: Verify 8%-12% moisture content, sand with 240#-320#, seal MDF surfaces
  2. Paint mixing: Combine components by weight per Taiho specifications, use within 1-hour pot life
  3. Primer coats: Apply 2-3 PU primer coats, sand 400# between each, avoid sand-through on edges
  4. Topcoat spray: Filter through 150-mesh, rest 10-15 min, spray 1-2 coats at ≤150μm total film
  5. Cure and inspect: Allow 24-72 hours full cure, check appearance, gloss, adhesion, hardness
